From a tortured Marine needing to save himself from his addictions and personal demons, to a British secret operative turned rogue, and a South African mercenary hunting down fugitives, Josh Blacker has brought to life intriguing and diverse characters to the television and silver screen over the past several years. In 2013, Blacker will make his feature film debut in Sony and TriStar Pictures’ ELYSIUM, to be released in IMAX and theaters nationwide on August 9, 2013. Set in the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Government officials will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. Blacker can be seen as South African mercenary “Crowe,” opposite Jodi Foster, Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, Diego Luna, Brandon Auret, and Alice Braga. In addition to ELYSIUM, Blacker also has several independent projects in the pipeline. His feature film FOCUS, a comedy he co-wrote, produced, and starred in will be making the festival rounds throughout the rest of 2013-14. He can also be seen in a supporting role in the indie drama THE LAST CROP [Tygh Runyan, Hugh Dillon], which is currently being pitched to festivals.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa to British parents, Blacker always had a love for performing. As a kid he would do imitations at the dinner table to get laughs from his family, and in high school he was active in the theatre program. Growing up in South Africa was an experience that Blacker notes shaped and inspired him as an actor, “I witnessed a lot of violence, I saw what it was like for people to be oppressed; it made me root for the underdog. People struggled, as people do all over the world, and it made me want to tell stories about equality and injustice, expose stereotypes, and play characters who expose the challenges facing humanity.” His senior year of high school, Blacker and his family made the difficult decision to leave SA, and move to Canada. He went on to attend the University of Calgary where he originally intended to obtain his BFA in Theatre. However after a year in school, a seed of doubt was planted in him; that acting may not be the most stable job and he changed majors to receive a Political Science and History degree. Blacker did know that he was good at performing, and found a way to practice: in the courtroom. After attending Queen’s University Law School in Kingston, Ontario he moved to Alberta, Canada where he practiced law for four years. Blacker tried working at local firms, national firms, and a small boutique firm, but quickly found that law was not his true calling – he was destined to act. In 2004 he quit law, packed up all his belongings and made the move to Vancouver to give the entertainment industry a real shot.

His first break came in 2006, booking a guest star role on “Killer Instinct” for FOX. Blacker went on to land a handful of roles on top shows such as “Supernatural” [WB], “Stargate: Atlantis” and “Painkiller Jane” [Sci-Fi Channel], “Blood Ties” [Lifetime] and “V” [ABC]. In 2009, he accepted a nine episode arc on “SGU Stargate Universe” as Marine Sgt. Spencer, his first opportunity to truly explore the depths of a tortured character. In 2010 he returned to FOX on “Human Target,” and also recently appeared on “Fringe” [FOX], and “Transporter: The Series” [HBO/Cinemax]. In 2013 he landed his first major role in a studio film, playing “Crowe” in the highly anticipated summer blockbuster ELYSIUM.

In addition to acting, Blacker has a passion for filmmaking, recently launching his production company Viewers Like You. He has been a vegan for nearly 20 years, and is an advocate for animal rights. Other hobbies include discovering craft beer and wine, and staying fit; Blacker is an avid athlete, being fiercely competitive on the squash courts, and holding belts in three different martial arts.
